A newly released video highlights the vital role of local business partners in the success of Graves County Economic Development’s (GCED’s) Power in Partnership and Community Connections student workforce development programs.

The video features Gregory Cook, Purchasing and Inside Sales Manager for Dairyman’s Supply Co., and Riley Beth Willett, Public Health Director for the Graves County Health Department, two organizations that have been actively involved with both Power in Partnership and Community Connections since they launched in 2024.

“The success of these programs depends on the participation of our local employers,” said GCED President Jason Lemle. “Over the course of the school year, we arrange for dozens of professionals to visit ATC classrooms to share their experience and expertise. We also coordinate several tours/visits for students, literally opening the door to new career opportunities.”

“With their commitment to this program, our employers are inspiring young people to consider local career options and developing a loyal workforce that will make these organizations successful in the years ahead,” Lemle added.

“We need to invest in our youth, said Willett. “If we don’t, they are going to leave us. If they don’t know what opportunities we have, they will find them elsewhere. We have to make connections and give them something to look forward to.”

Willett said many of the students who visit the Health Department don’t realize the wide scope of the work they do. “It’s a good opportunity for students to learn what we do, then take that information back and begin thinking that these are jobs they might do in the future,” said Willett.

“Just a few minutes after we hosted a Power in Partnership visit for about 20 kids at Dairyman’s Supply, one of the students reached out to me by email to show sincere interest in an internship in our accounting department,” said Cook. “I wouldn’t have had that interaction otherwise. In the end, it can benefit both of us.”

“For kids to have met us at the Internship Fair or been here on a tour, it can really help with hiring in the future.” Cook added. “I think every business can benefit from this, and you’re helping the kids out, too,” he added.

Power in Partnership is a collaborative effort between GCED and the Mayfield-Graves County Area Technology Center (ATC) that connects ATC students with local employers and industry leaders, helping students visualize career opportunities available right in their own community, while giving businesses a direct connection to the next generation of the local workforce.

Community Connections helps students learn about local career prospects and build relationships that could lead to internships, job shadowing, and other professional development opportunities. It is coordinated by GCED in partnership with Graves County and Mayfield Independent Schools, the City of Mayfield, Mayfield/Graves County Chamber of Commerce, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and the West Kentucky Workforce Board.
